Share Free Music Legally

How is File Sharing “Wrong”?
I can give away anything I own Morally and Legally. I am “stealing” music then for listening to it on a radio according to some. Some choose to listen on THEIR own time and would NEVER buy it anyways. ANY industry MUST adjust to times and technology, so.. ALL the music that is “stolen” is FREE elsewhere.. I DON’T GET IT? (I’m NOT Trolling) Could you justify the “Wrong” side please? -Thanks
I do NOT Share or get Music online. I have bought all my music CD & Cassettes over the years. But If I chose too I do not agree it’s Wrong- so far anyways… Thanks
Your question pre-supposes that what you consider “free” music is, in fact, free or that you own music you buy. When you stream music through legitimate sites like last.fm, YouTube and dizzler, the site pays the record label a small fee every time the song is played. It may not cost you anything to listen to the music, but someone is still paying for the artist for using the song. (The site pays out of its advertising revenue and premium subscriptions, if it has premium subscriptions).
When people buy albums, they do not “own” the songs. Instead, all they own is the right to use the music for their own non-commercial purposes. The artist retains ownership over the intellectual property (the song). Someone can’t give away what they don’t own, which is why downloading/uploading copyrighted music is illegal. If people don’t like a song well enough to pay for it, then the fair thing to do is to stream it so the artist at least gets paid something.
I moonlight for a music mag and spend a lot of time with bands … some on big labels, some on indie labels, some who self-release albums. With few exceptions, they can’t afford to be full-time musicians. The band members work for a few years to scrape together enough money to record an album or, for the bands on larger labels, get an “advance” from the record company that they need to pay back. Downloading the album for free means:
- Anywhere from $2 to $7 per album does not go to the band; the amount depends on what fee-sharing arrangement is with the label and distribution company. People who claim that bands only make a few cents off of albums really ought to do their homework by, for example, going to CD Baby and reading the distribution terms.
- The band cannot get sponsors for tours. Sponsors (whether a record label or company like Vans) looks at how well the band sells — not at how popular the band is among free music downloaders.
- Labels sign fewer new bands. Again, from the labels’ perspective, music is a business and there is only so much money to go around.
- Bands release albums less frequently because they can’t afford it.
I really do appreciate your question. I know it seems stupid that so much “free” digital music is available for streaming, from sites like limewire, or can be ripped from YouTube videos.
