Do the stanky leg? Why is music today so awful!?
On friday, I was flipping the channels and came across a video called Do the stanky leg? From my understanding this song has been out for some time but I was appalled! And it was the number 1 song on the countdown! Can you believe that! Music today seems to lack true thought or a creative process of any kind. Why?
Lots of good answers here. I just want to add one more thing: censorship.
For the past, what, decade now, MTV and other outlets have come down harder and harder on lyrics in music, censoring this for being “vulgar”, that for being a “drug reference”, that for being a “gun reference”, that other thing for being “an advertisement”…so what happens is, everything gets watered down to the “Wal-Mart edit”, or the edit where *everything* that would be offensive to an 88-year-old grandma is cut out and replaced by randomly-generated babble.
After several years of this…you can see why people don’t even bother writing lyrics anymore. Why bother when you can’t say anything without being cut?
This basically takes *all* of the talent out of the equation, such that the rampant pop-starlet-isms of modern music end up running amuck. You get folks with no talent, just people who are halfway young, cute and have one good note to their name, just grab a microphone and *piss on it*.
Or they try way too hard to make up new dances, like that “stanky leg”, which is just another crump-ism no doubt. A seizure waiting to be legitimized.
