How to speed up my PC – running really slowly?
HI all!
I’m running a 2 year old Dell PC with 4gb of ram. The hard drive is filled to approx 80% of its 500gb storage capacity and I use the following programmes a lot, usually at the same time – Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Firefox.
I never actively download anything such as programmes, music or movies files etc.. except stored data and cookies that come with streaming videos, and visiting other sites. And I don’t subscibe to any RSS feeds.
Lately, Photoshop has been taking ages to load and stuggles with rendering filter options and loading brushes.
My PC usually runs very quietly, but has become fairly noisy too.
I know that I need to clear out a lot of junk to speed my system up, but I aint gotta glue how to do it properley and effectively!

Sounds as if you want to defrag your hard drive. Start > right click on My Computer> left click on manage > left click on defragment your hard drive…that’ll do for starters and will take awhile for 500GB.
If startup and shutdown are slow, then you probably want to clean the registry. For this I use GlarySoft’s Registry Repair…it’s free and is available at http://www.download.com. Just query for Glary when you get there.
Your computer’s not that old so I’m assuming the cpu is multi-core? If not, then pshop and dweaver are 2 big programs to run at once. If not multi-core cpu, you might want to eventually look into upgrading the cpu if the motherboard will allow it.
Plenty of memory. Adding more will only be a waste unless you’re running a 64-bit operating system.
