Music Videos Metallica One

What does the music video for Metallica “One” actually mean?
I am having a hard time understanding who the boy is and the old man and the others. How does it all relate? I must also say this is some of the stuff of my nightmares!
Actually, James Hetfield had the idea for this song and had never read the book or seen the movie Johnny Got his Gun. James talked to a friend about his idea and he told James he needed to check this book/movie out because they were so similar to his idea. James’ inspiration was a twisting of the thought of being cut off from the outside world, having no hope.
Basically the music video follows a man go to war where he steps on a landmine and is blown up. The man lives but is only kept alive by machines, has no arms or legs, no face, cannot speak. The clips through the song from Johnny Got his Gun are mostly his dreams while being kept alive. The old man you asked about is the main character’s father, and the boy is the main character when he was young. (The memory of the conversation “what is democracy” where they are sitting together and the father tells the boy “for Democracy, any man would give his only begotten son” I think is symbolic of a loss in hope for the main character.) Many of the dreams are memories of events that took place in the past, and some are simply creative imagery, such as “the armless legless, wonder”. The part where his father helps him remember morse code, it’s like a glimmer of returned hope for him- a way to escape.
I think it all fits together as the tragic story of a man trapped within himself, losing all hope and faith in mankind. If you read between the words of the song, and the words I just wrote, you’ll understand better than if you read the words at face value.
