Rhythm tips for guitar?

While I have just starting playing guitar, I am bad with my ears. I have tired really hard and can’t train them to help me tune my guitar so I use electronic tuner.

Because I’m bad with my ears, I also have trouble hearing the rhythm of the songs I want to play. Recently, I started learning how to play the song “Big Black Horse and Cherry Tree” by KT Tunstall and after hearing it a few times, I got the rhythm – for one part of it.

This has got my hopes up and I really want to learn to play other songs.

Can anyone offer me any tips in how to be able to recognize the rhythm of the music better or how to know when to play the strings in a downstoke, upstroke, stops the strings from vibrating, letting the strings ring on because often times, it’s hard for me to recognize how to play the song, even when I watch the video of the artist playing it.

First, find out what time signature the song is in. Then buy a metronome and practice along with it. It will keep the rhythm for you. Practice slowly at first, and gradually increase your speed. As for the picking techniques, you should use alternate picking (up-down-up-down) consistently as much as possible, unless the pattern being played crosses strings in such a way that it is impossible, or if the song employs a different technique. If chords are being played, you can differentiate the upstrokes from the downstrokes by determining what sound is more dominant. If the high notes in the chord sound more dominant, it is probably being played with an upstroke. If the bass notes sound more prominent, you should probably be playing a downstroke. Hope this was helpful.

KT Tunstall’s debut album Eye To The Telescope is the creative consequence of her inquiring imagination. “My songs examine and explore little specific emotions or situations or stories,” she explains. “They’re kitchen table songs, like a conversation between me and one other person. It’s almost like an alien has been sent to get emotional samples from human beings and put it all together on a rec…
