How do I get licenced to play/record cover songs (Joke band)?
Hey I’m in a cover band doing everything from iron maiden and metallica to dead or alive, the wurzels and chris de burgh. afaik, we’re planning to make a few pennies playing gigs, and will probably release our music for free online.
Do we need a licence of any kind if were not releasing for profit? Also, I seriously doubt that the comedic value of a band effects this, but do you reeaallly need a licence to sell recordings of daft 80s songs on an accordion and ukelele? We’re just simple farmers and we can’t afford to pay out hundreds of pounds to pete burns etc to play his crappy songs in wurzel style.
Also, for bonus points: I’m working under the assumption that we don’t need a licence to play these songs in pubs etc because venues that have live bands on are generally licenced by the PRS to allow them to play covers and stuff?
Thanks in advance!!
Hi,
To my knowledge you won’t need permission from the original artists if playing in places like pubs since the ‘ public entertainment license’ places like this have should cover this. Even more so if the pub has its own jukebox.
If you were however planning to release music and sell it (in other words making a profit), you would need to obtain permission, since it was their song(s) in the first place, even if the background music is the same (or similar) with alternate lyrics.
Hope this helps you out and good luck
