RHH: What do you think the main reason is for Sampling being such a big part of hip hop production?
There are quite a few arguments hovering around apart from the cliche “LOLOL ITS COZ RAP RHYMES WITH CRAP. AND CRAP CANT PLAY INSTRUMENTS”.
RHH2: Who is your favourite producer who is known not to sample a lot of the time?
Feel free to share why you think Sampling is such a big part of production?
RHH2: What are some good beginners turntables? I have a decent collection of music that could mix pretty well (No pun intended)
Bill – A thorough and musically based argument. You have to post one of your scores sometime.
Tool.
Because when Kool Herc isolated the breakbeat and basically invented hip hop in doing so, he did it from a record he was playing – not his own composition.
Most of the people involved in hip hop’s conception didn’t have the luxury of owning musical instruments, so it was natural that the musically minded ones took their inspiration from the records they *could* afford.
After Herc’s block parties became THE place to be, the other DJs started to look to what they could do to get in on some of that. Knowing it was the isolation of the breakbeat that made the crowd really go wild, they took that and looked for ways to move it forward.
So, that mentality has been with hip hop from the start: you take a track already in existence, isolate the bit the crowd really wants to hear (much like the Jamacian dub artists who influenced Herc), and fromt there it grew to other ways of taking a track and creating something new from it.
The more of a success it became, the more money DJs had for equipment and the more sophisticated sampling became.
