Parents, have you read the lyrics of the songs that are most popular today?
I have a son (11 years old) that is listening the ‘top 20′ music stations. I noticed that the lyrics in many of the songs are ‘bleeped’ so I decided to find out what the songs were saying. I was shocked, disturbed and disgusted. Take a few minutes to read the lyrics of Ridin’ by Chamillionaire, Snap Yo Fingers by Lil Jon, Lean Wit It Rock Wit It by Dem Franchize Boyz, It’s Goin’ Down by Yung Joc and Shake That by Eminem. In brief every one of the songs contains profanity, drug use, guns, sex and violence. Is this what we want our young children exposed to? The music is played everywhere, amusement parks, skating rinks, dances, and parties (for middle schoolers) hosted by the SCHOOL!
I am an absolute believer in free speech however we all have to be aware of what type of music is available to our children. I felt was important to get the word as a warning to those who may not know.
My son is only 3, but I teach 9th and 10th graders at a local (midwestern) high school. I agree that some of this music is pretty outrageous; however, I think it’s all about the shock value and the desire to go along with what everyone else is doing. You have the same thing every generation since the 1950s. Since I live in a suburban utopia I find it absolutely hilarious that middle-class white kids from Indiana say they “identify” with hip-hop/rap lyrics that talk about gang violence, etc. I guess it makes them feel tough or something. It’s unfortunate that middle-schoolers are listening to unedited songs at their dances – I’m assuming that the school’s administrators are allowing this? On the other hand, if you don’t give them the music that they want, they won’t go to a dance and will just go hang out somewhere else and do God-knows-what! It’s creative expression at a relatively crude level, but creative expression nonetheless. Remember Maplethorpe’s photos? Maybe I’m overly lenient, but I’d just let this one go…they’ll grow up and their tastes will change.
