Music Downloading: Is it hurting the industry?
Since the days of Napster, music downloading has been increasing. Many artists have voiced their disapproval of downloading, like Metallica. While other bands, like Nine Inch Nails have embraced their online fan base and have started publishing their albums for free online.
What are your thoughts? Is it about the money, or about the art? Does the ability to aquire music for free prevent you from buying it entirely?
Yes and No.
Their are huge numbers of people today whos collection is almost entirely ripped. This does hurt the Label and the Artist. It is still abusiness…and none of these guys like going to their job and not getting paid for it. Yuo can argue artistic integrity and the like all you want… but in the end… business is business.
BUT, the industry has definitely hurt themselves too. The average CD, complate in packaging caost about 5 cents ot make. tru you have to figue in a decent profit for the company, and the studio, the artists etc…. but even ate 10-12 bucks a disc, they are definitely MAKING money. 20 bucks is ridiculous and driving alot of people to NOT buy CDs.
So both sides are hurting the industries. But their is another consideration. This music IS the property of the Labels and the Bands. They own it…so when people take it without paying for it..it is still stealing, and still illegal. For some reason, theft and dishonesty seemed to be accepted in our society today, but it still doesnt make it right.
***Chris W, thank you for your very valid arguments.
Add into it the cost of renting a studio..paying a producer and editor, the money involved in advertising…etc.
“It should be about the art”…my ass. Oh, BTW…..you know these cool concerts and Arena shows and Festivals? Its the Record company that pays the cash upfront to rent them, and then promotes the event.
Lets see how many of these bands without a lable can pony up 50,000 in advance to hold a concert.
