Why shouldn’t car companies get part of sale price of a used car?
Think about it… they sell a new car to person A. Person A uses the car, decides to sell it to B. Here in PA there’s a state tax to do that…ok, why shouldn’t the car company get part of that? They sold a car for a person to use, not for that person to then act as a car company and be able to resell the product. Same situation for music… if I download an MP3 for free I’m in the legal wrong…but if I sell a disk on Amazon the artist also gets nothing. Why not? Why can’t publishers have a license that stipulate they a fee for when someone poses as a music publisher and sells that music instead of the person buying it new.
Never understood that.
When you buy something, you have the right to do whatever you want with it. That’s what buying is. The company you buy from cedes all of their rights in that product to you, the purchaser (unless it’s not fully paid for, like if you have a loan for the item).
That doesn’t apply to things like music… which are COPYRIGHTED… i.e. restricting your right to COPY and DISTRIBUTE what you’ve purchased. You’re free to sell your ORIGINAL copy as you would with any other good you purchase. A copyright stipulates basically what you’re saying… anytime you duplicate something copyrighted and then sell it, the copyright owner is to receive a portion of the proceeds (that is, if they first give you permission to copy and distribute).
Having a right to an arbitrary percentage of every sale down the line without a copyright… now that’s what we refer to as a pyramid scheme.
