Free Music Distribution Sites
If the album is not commercially available, would it be acceptable to use a free internet download?
If there is an album you’re looking for that is no long sold in stores (locally or online), what would the legal implications be of downloading it on a free music distribution site?
This includes things that have been released in the far past that are now very rare and things that have never been sold by the copyright holder (such as game soundtracks).
Well, they (the copyright holder) can sue you whether or not they ever sold it. A lawsuit is really the only thing that can happen to you, as it would be nearly impossible to prove that you didn’t simply make a backup of music you already owned and then lost the original copy.
Lawsuits are very rare, however, as millions of people download music everyday, and simply put, they can’t sue everybody.
