Free Music Blues Scales
Can you play the saxophone? I have a question for you.?
I need a good book on how to play soprano saxophone, but not just a book for beginners. I’ve played tenor for four years, then stopped playing for a few years and now I need to learn soprano because of my new band. I remember perfectly all the fingering, but I don’t have good embouchure, which seems to be very different from tenor. So I need to exercise embouchure and tone, to make it less robotic, more human-like.
I also need to learn jazz and blues improvization and the scales, I will have to mainly improvize in my new band. I know all the music theory (I’ve played the piano for 15 years), but almost nothing about jazz and blues theory, just a little by ear.
To summarize: I already know music theory and fingering and I need to exercise tone and improvization.
Feel free to give me books that are very well known, I haven’t read any books about saxophone at all.
Another poster mentioned Larry Teal’s “The Art of Saxophone Playing”; this is a great text for those who learn well from books since it breaks down into great detail all the issues of embouchure and breathing.
As for theory I recommend the Mark Levine text “The Jazz Theory Book”.
For listening on that instrument, you can’t beat these three: Wayne Shorter, David Liebman, and Branford Marsalis. Messrs Shorter and Liebman collaborated on a Coltrane tribute that is available on DVD.
