Download Country Music Videos

I have EV-DO Internet from Verizon Wireless since I live out in the country…?

and we recently got a letter saying we have gone to 4 GB of our Bandwidth in the last payment date. We are aloud to have 5GB before they revoke the internet from us. Now my father is blaming all this on me, since I use IRC with mIRC and he said that IRC will “steal” bandwidth and it gets used with other people on the IRC. Now I did look it up and see that it does take BW but I don’t think its taken almost all 5GB! Which he is blaming me for. Please help me to prove him wrong. Here are my specs:

What We Have;
3 Computers usually always running with internet.

What We Do;
E-Mail – All 3 computers
MSN – 2 Computers
mIRC – 1 Computer
iTunes (Downloading Music/Videos) – 2 Computers
Other Internet Programs – 2 Computers
YouTube (Videos) – All 3 Computers

Please help me get help by ethier anwsering with proff so I can prove him wrong or something!

4 GB per month – twice what we use per month, as a rule, on ADSL 512 Mbps, so it is not unreasonable – I have large emails at times, and the other 3 notebooks do mostly what you do.

Videos and iTunes downloads will be the biggest bandwidth users. Don’t forget that even if you are not SAVING a video, you are still downloading it to see it. If you see and/or hear it, it is downloaded traffic.

I have never seen mIRC; but a quick googling suggests it is like any of the online messaging programs – and they usually are only text, unless you add files, e.g. pictures, so these instant messenger programs ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE A VERY SMALL COMPONENT OF INTERNET TRAFFIC.

HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Emails with attachments are ever increasing in size and number.

You ought to be able to obtain a download or printout of your downloads/uploads records for the month – just times and volumes. Determine whether someone was actually using the internet at the time shown. If not, then what……

Well, I have seen very expensive cases recently where VIRUSES, WORMS, etc have infected PCs and they use your PCs as drones or bots to conduct denial of service attacks in conjunction with other infected PCs, and spam email sending.

It is critical that all PCs have reputable up-to-date anti-virus software, as well as reputable spyware and ad-ware search and destroy programs blocking software installed on them. Includes key-loggers – bl@@dy dangerous to the security of your finances, and other personal information, including identity theft!!!

If the internet connection is always on then the modem is likely to be subjected to internet traffic trying to get into your home network. It should be turned off when all are asleep or at work/school. The modem should have security access applied – even to MAC address level. If the home network is wireless to the EV-DO (what we used to have in Oz as CDMA/WCDMA until April this year), then modem security MUST be implemented, especially if its SSID is not hidden (mine is – but I am about to implement restriction to allowed MAC addresses only).

That traffic trying to get in has been counted as part of you upload and download limits for the month. But the spyware/worms are the worst bandwidth stealers. they are attacking the rest of the world from the infected home computer and most people don’t know it is happening. They may think that the PC is running a bit slow; but don’t know why, or are even prepared to put up with it. Remember these worms work in the background, so you generally won’t know.

They also prevent you from downloading anti-virus software, or the frequent updates to them, making themselve irremovable without additional clean resources – not easy if all your PCs have been compromised.

I had to rebuild my 25 year-old son’s laptop recently; from scratch. Because I work in PC and server-based support, I have specialist resources and skills that enable me to pull these swifties. Others have to pay……

The moral of the story is almost certainly going to be “keep your protection up-to-date” almost daily; but certainly weekly. Don’t wait for the reminder from the application.

Symantec release new updates to Norton and SAV on Wednesdays in the US. I am sure the other companies do something like that, too.

Then there is Spyware/Adaware – AV software does not necessarily do the additional protection that these do.

In summary, I’d be fearing the worst and taking well advised and well informed expert help to ensure that you don’t have a problem. Turned off PCs and modem will lessen the traffic, if they have been invaded.

Good luck – don’t panic, and don’t junk the PC’s contents – develop a plan to determine if you have a problem, and then how to solve it – once you have a plan of attack, isolate all the PCs and do one at a time, and don’t bring one back onto the network except to fix it, then take it off (turn it off) until all are fixed.
